Latest Connecticut Sports Betting News

With legal online sports betting in Connecticut only a few months old, all eyes are on the growth that the market experiences. So far, all signs are pointing towards residents of the Constitution State taking well to online sportsbooks.

In October 2021, the three online sportsbooks handled a combined $54m worth of bets. This came despite not fully launching until October 19th, meaning that this amount was wagered in just 12 days.

Business continued to boom in December, where $150m worth of bets were handled across all online and retail settings. This increased again in January to $158m, which is an especially impressive figure as January was also the month where legal online sports betting came to New York.

With New York situated off Connecticut’s southern border, there were some worries that when legal sports betting came to the Empire State, it would mean less New York state residents would travel to Connecticut to use their sportsbooks. However, with the growth in Connecticut sports betting continuing, it seems these worries were misplaced.

Fanatics Sportsbook Connecticut Has Launched!

In early December 2023, the Connecticut Lottery Corporation revealed Fanatics Betting and Gaming to be its new sports betting partner! As of mid-December 2023, Fanatics Sportsbook Connecticut has now officially launched, broadening the sports betting arena in the state.

The History of Connecticut Sports Betting

The first move to legalize sports betting in Connecticut came in 2017, when the state legislature officially moved sports gambling oversight to the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). The DCP duly noted their new responsibility, and began to look for ways to build a regulatory framework for legal sports betting in the Constitution State.

The next big step came in 2018, when the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) as unconstitutional. This allowed individual states to set their own laws when it came to sports betting, and would allow Connecticut to put the DCP regulatory framework into action.

However, it took some times to pass the laws to bring sports betting to the Constitution State. Initial attempts to pass legal online sports betting faltered in 2019 and 2020 after two years of intense negotiations.

A deal was eventually struck with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, who run casinos in Connecticut, which saw new compacts signed in 2021. This lead to the first retail sportsbooks arriving in September 2021, with legal online betting following closely behind in October 2021.

Betting on the NFL?

Connecticut Sports Teams to bet on

While Connecticut does not have any professional sports teams of its own, residents have some of the best teams in the country to pick from to support thanks to their location. With Boston to the north and New York to the south, Connecticut sports fans a wealth of professional teams to support.

New England Patriots

While Connecticut don’t have any professional sports teams, they are represented in the NFL by the New England Patriots in many parts of the state. As with the other, smaller New England states, many in Connecticut come together under the Patriots banner and support them in their Foxborough, MA home.

The Patriots are one of the most successful NFL franchises of all time thanks to their legendary pairing of quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. Together they won six Super Bowl titles between 2001 and 2018, before Brady eventually chose to finish his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Belichick is still a part of the Patriots, though, and the team looks set to once again be a contender come the postseason. After a tough post-Brady season with Cam Newton at quarterback, the Patriots drafted Mac Jones and found themselves instantly back in the playoffs.

New York Giants

While the New York Giants may not have the huge amounts of success that their rival New England Patriots enjoy, the two teams have actually met twice in the Super Bowl in recent years. Both of those times, it was the Giants who came out with the last laugh.

The teams first met in 2007 for Super Bowl XLII, with the Giants heavy underdogs. However, thanks to Giants receiver David Tyree’s legendary ‘Helmet Catch,’ the underdog New York team was able to come away with the win.

The same thing happened again in 2011 for Super Bowl XLVI, when the underdog Giants once again beat the much more favored Patriots. However, since then, the Patriots have by far been the more successful team, while the Giants have tried successions of head coaches as they attempt to regain their success.

New York Jets

The New York Jets are one of the long-term struggling NFL franchises, with the team only having one winning season since 2011. The team are also without a postseason appearance since 2010, when they lost the second in a pair of back-to-back AFC Championship games.

However, despite recent struggles, the Jets are still one of the best loved teams thanks to their colorful history. The team won Super Bowl III with the legendary ‘Broadway’ Joe Namath at quarterback, providing a piece of NFL history that even those who weren’t around to see in person speak of fondly.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox were formed in 1901 as the Boston Americans, and have called the city home ever since. They are one of the most successful teams in baseball, having picked up nine World Series titles between 1903 and 2018.

However, Red Sox fans had to endure an immense 86 year championship drought thanks to the Curse of the Bambino.

The curse started after the Red Sox decided to sell Babe Ruth – their top player, and perhaps the most famous baseball player of all time – to their rival New York Yankees in 1920. Ruth propelled the Yankees into being the most successful franchise of all time, while the Red Sox could not find a title win between 1918 and 2004.

New York Yankees

Connecticut residents who are brought up supporting the baseball team to their south have the good luck of backing the most successful MLB franchise of all time. The New York Yankees have an incredible 27 World Series titles to their name, more than double that of the second-placed St Louis Cardinals’ 11.

The New York Yankees struggled in the early years after their formation in 1901. It was only after purchasing the rights to Babe Ruth from their rival Boston Red Sox in 1920 that their fortunes began to change.

Powered by Ruth, the Yankees won the first of their 27 titles in 1923. The team have since continued to be one of the most successful in the league, although fans are starting to get slightly anxious, as they have not won a World Series title since 2009.
