Hi All,

Recent transplant from Maryland here. Survived the move, now trying to tackle the latest problem: My full-sized bed won't fit up the staircase. I've heard I can cut the box spring. but you can't cut a mattress. you can't fold a mattress. has anyone else encountered a problem like this? how did you resolve it?

One friend cut the box spring and folded over the mattress to get them upstairs. Another friend went through the window. My brother put a giant groove in his ceiling from pushing it up and then had to fix the ceiling afterwards. Good luck.

Is there a inside balcony or loft at the top? Maybe you could get some rope and pull it up and over a railing, rather than going up the stairs?
Or is there an outside balcony with a sliding door , where you cold pull it up the out side then in?

cut the box spring and you might as well throw it away. I would be looking at taking it through the window. didn't you think about this when you first looked at the house? what did the last owner do? Did they have the same sized mattress?

Waterbed?
Air mattress?
Foam rubber mattress?
Sleep on first floor?

Not being able to get a full size mattress upstairs means that the builders were pretty dumb. I'd consider moving. You don't know what other dumb decisions they made.

That sucks. Looks like camping mats and sleeping bags for you. We have a king-sized bed, which means the box springs are in 2 pieces, thankfully. So, in our 1907 house, we had to fold our mattress in half to get it in. And, then to get it out. Now, it's forever deformed and bothers my back. If you can't get it in thru a window, then you might have to build something inside. Anyone you know handy enough to do that?

Yeah had the same problem...

Full bed would not go up stairs. Could not make the turn from dining room to get into the stairwell. The mattress had enough flex to be bent to finally be forced around the turn. Box spring no way.

Finally solved it by removing a wall section over the doorway to allow fully standing it vertical and then it could be twisted around the bend. That wall section was made removable for the future with a panel that can just be unscrewed. Puppy may have to come back down out of there one of these days. So first trick is try to get it standing vertical, that usually gives the smallest footprint.

As mentioned if that fails, try to find a way to take it in thru the roof or upstairs. Lots of places have access to the roof and have a door to get up there. Modern windows just pop out and that can work with a big window. One of my nephews did it by hoisting the suckers up by a rope 4 stories and coming down via the roof door.

Get a studio bed frame that only needs the mattress without box spring. You can't fold a mattress however you can bend it enough to get up the stairs.

I have a similar problem. I have a spiral staircase and will be moving in tomorrow. I have to pay $150 to rent a "genie lift" so it can go through the second floor balcony doors... but I think it's worth it... I couldn't imagine cutting a box spring or mattress!

Buy a new bed that can fit... that seems like the easiest fix... if you need it for two people then buy 2 beds that can fit and slide them together.....
