Has anyone here ever used Rubber Gasket Material, do you need a selant?

Well I put them on the mill the other day, and wound up using the Indian head gasket shellac on the Fiber Rubber paper. So far no leaks seem apparent. Even though they said they were rubber, when I started cutting the paper it really felt as though they were a fibrous paper with some rubber imbedded in it, so I just in absence of any manufacture recommendations went with my tried and true way. What do others here on this site do about gaskets for say a milling machine power feed gearbox? I checked McMaster and they have a ton of products but none I've used before. I have once before tried the permatex with no gasket required and didn't like it. I had all sorts of issues with leaks, and then the darn stuff held that cover on like it was expoxy. Thus I have in the past just liked the paper and shellac system that I can buy at the automotive supply. Infact I was rather supprised that McMaster didn't have similar which leads me to think there may be a better system they sell instead?
